Room to Reward Charity Golf Day – A Breeze, a Challenge, and £15,000 Raised
On Tuesday 3rd September, the Room to Reward Charity Golf Day took place at the stunning Barton on Sea Golf Club. Perched on the clifftops with sweeping views across to the Isle of Wight, the course is a true slice of paradise – even if the famous “Barton Breeze” was more than living up to its name this year. With the wind howling, it was a day of determination, laughter, and some very creative shot-making!
Despite the blustery conditions, the golfers dug deep, and their efforts helped raise an incredible £15,000 to support Room to Reward’s mission of recognising hidden heroes who give so much to others.
After the golf, the celebrations continued with dinner at the beautiful Christchurch Harbour Hotel – the perfect setting to round off a day of generosity and community spirit.
Carbon Balancing the Day
At Scopes Carbon, we were delighted to play our part by carbon balancing the travel emissions for the event. Most of the 100 golfers were local, driving a combined 4,200 miles. But as is often the case, a few longer journeys tipped the balance:
- One golfer flew from Portugal to Bournemouth, then drove to Barton on Sea – and made the same journey back home afterwards.
- Another also flew from Portugal to Bournemouth, drove to Barton, then travelled on to London by train before boarding a flight all the way to Sydney, Australia.
- A third golfer arrived from London, having flown in from Uganda.
In total, once all the journeys were counted, the travel footprint reached 22,000 miles – creating around 6 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
To put that into perspective:
- 6 tonnes of CO₂ weighs about the same as an African bull elephant
- 22,000 miles is roughly the same as a round trip from London to Sydney
Why Travel Matters
Travel and transport emissions are so often overlooked, yet they can make the biggest impact. In fact, research shows that up to 78% of the carbon footprint of a conference or event comes from delegate travel alone.
That’s why carbon balancing makes such a real difference. By addressing the journeys we make – whether local or long-haul – we can take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future.
At Scopes Carbon, we know that all businesses can start making that difference today by carbon offsetting travel and transport emissions. It’s a simple, practical way to reduce your environmental impact without reducing the value of bringing people together.
